Monitor/Display
DR1618 is the single-chip solution for USB Type-C® port protection featuring 6-channel ESD and 4-channel (CC1/CC2/SBU1/SBU2) VBUS overvoltage short-circuit protection.
DR1618 does not affect normal use of products. When the cable has detected a voltage exceeding OVP value, the high-voltage switch will be turned on and effect an isolation. In addition, DR1618 provides IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection to CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2, DP and DM pins to save the hassle of adding extra high-voltage TVS diode to cables.
Engineer Suggestions on Monitor/Display USB Type-C® Products are as follows:
- Confirm USB Type-C support to DisplayPort alt mode and Thunderbolt, as well as requirements for resolution and bandwidth.
- USB specification requirement: USB2.0, USB3.2 Gen1x1, USB3.2 Gen2x1, etc.
- Selection of USB PD Solution: Knowing characteristics of USB PD solutions by each vendor, supported voltage and current, and suitable applications for optimal cost structure.
- Soundness of USB Type-C Protection Mechanism: as CC and SBU have extremely near proximity to VBUS which would result in RMA issue due to tendency of short circuit and furthermore lead to influence on brand image, pin protection mechanism cannot be ignored (please refer to DR1618 and DR1620).
- Component Layout: refer to layouts in IC design guide for wire layout for minimal dimension and optimized high-speed signal quality.
Other Suggestions:
- Prepare for countermeasures in order to reduce PCB revisions in future value adjustments upon issues.
- Contact Granite River Labs or other USB-IF ATC labs of Allion Labs if USB-IF certification is required for your product.
